When you walk into a forest, or even just past a small patch of beautiful greenery or a garden,

do you look up at the trees or down at the grass?

I am obssess with the creatures lower down.

Dewdrops hidden among the moss, fallen trunks lying like boats on an ocean of green,

leaves painted with different colours by time, softening or remaining crispy...

Most importantly, mushrooms.

Their charm lies in their temporarity, uncertainty and interdeterminancy:

pop up in certain seasons, conditions and environments, but even the most experienced forager cannot guarantee their appearance.

I also love them for they symbolise the marginalised: they are creatures of the exotic, the repelled and the despised.

Sound familiar?

Yes, nature is cultured.

Here I hope to offer them and myself a little mercy:

A little chance to be seen, thought of and cherished equally.

I call this act of making the invisible visible "fungisibility", literally about fungi and metaphorically about the beyond.

Fungiseeing Gallery

A selection of photographs of my learning and exploitation of mushrooms and forest since 2023, noted with random provenance information and comments.

Mostly in woods and parks near Edinburgh, some in the Lake District, Eastbourne, 云南 Yunnan and 新疆 Xinjiang.

I am greedy.

I wish that one day I would be as thrilled as I am to find a puffball or a morel,

that is asking for a utopia of equality.

But for now,

I allow myself to indulge in the joy of their diversity and perculiarity.
